Hello,
I’m Ann Hilberry Randhawa and I’m a Teaching Professor and the Spanish 231 Coordinator in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. My journey with languages began during my junior year of high school in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where I fell in love with the Spanish language and Mexican culture.
I majored in Psychology at Kalamazoo College and later pursued Hispanic literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning a Master’s degree and completing a year toward my PhD. My passion for languages led me to Lisbon, Portugal, where I taught English as a Second Language and honed my Portuguese. Returning to the U.S., I taught Spanish and ESL at Kalamazoo College before joining the University of Michigan in 1990.
For over three decades, I’ve been inspiring students to embrace Spanish and guiding instructors to find joy in teaching. Beyond my work at UM, I’m also a Spanish and ESL instructor at Linguasol, where I help learners who might doubt their ability to succeed in language learning.
My teaching philosophy focuses on breaking down barriers, building confidence, and making language learning accessible to everyone. Whether it’s helping students grasp Spanish or supporting them in exploring English as a second language, I’m committed to creating an engaging and supportive environment that motivates learners to embrace new linguistic adventures.
